It's by Nikki McClure, an artist that I LOOOOOOVE.. All her work is cut out of paper with exacto knives. I was excited to come across this picture on notepads at the buyolympia.com website, and so I ordered two to be picked up at their local warehouse. Of course then I got sick and T has been busy training a new employee at the shop he works at, so we haven't made it over yet. We'll be cutting the picture off each sheet of paper (which we'll save to be used as intended - for writing notes) and gluing them to the notecards. The rest of the work is done:
I got the idea for these while browsing at SCRAP a few weeks ago, when I came across boxes filled with hundreds of gorgeous notecards, for 5 cents each. Although I didn't have a set plan for them yet, I scooped up about 120 of them for $6. I decided to figure out a plan for them to be used on the guestbook table, since we still hadn't come up with an idea. Last week I got sick of thinking about it, so we're just going to have people hang them on something (tree branches in a vase? probably.) with whatever they want to write on the backs.
Things I used:
Corner rounder. Hole puncher. Striped yarn from my stash - I bought it on clearance for $1.50 a few months ago because I couldn't pass up the stripey cuteness! Note card. Not shown: paper cutter.
I started by cutting the backs off all the cards. They're stored, waiting for some other project involving cardstock. Then I cut each front in half - along the edge of the brown box. Then I rounded all the corners (in hindsight I should've skipped this - time-consuming and gave me a huge blister on my thumb!) and hole-punched the top. Then I cut the yarn into 1-foot-ish pieces. Each piece got folded in half, looped through the punched hole, and pulled tight. Then I made a knot about halfway up the string. Then I tied a bow in each.
While doing all this, I listened to Elizabeth Gilbert's Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace With Marriage, which I am loving. I can't wait to get the notepads so I can finish these and mark them off my (ever-growing) list!
On Tuesday night I played around with felt and tissue paper. My attempt at Not Martha's fabulous felt dahlia was an utter failure. It's supposed to look like this:
but I couldn't even get the petals to stick! I think I need to pick up the glue recommended in the post. My generic Joann-brand tacky glue did NOT do the trick. I wish I had a picture of how poorly my attempt turned out!
I was more successful with the tissue paper. I've been wanting to try out the Martha Stewart pompoms and just kept putting it off. My first attempt was BAD. But then I assessed why it was bad, and realized it was because my accordian folds were too wide. Also, my paper wasn't 20x30, it was 20x26, so I didn't get enough volume. My second attempt was a lot better:
Good enough for us to order about $50 in tissue paper from papermart.com! This will make up a huge portion of our decor, between the pompoms and the (yet to be experimented with) pomander balls!
Lastly, a couple pics of T being a dutiful future-husband, ironing wedding napkins.
Up next: healing, getting back to working out (thanks, illness), a million other things! Oh, and finding a job: I'm 6 days from being unemployed.
